Affiliate Marketing Strategies: The Basics
I get it, "The internet is filled with so much information about affiliate marketing that you're confused even after you read it right."
It wouldn't be like this today!
We'll start by understanding the basics of affiliate marketing, then follow some practical approaches to making a lot of money.
Let's start with the most basic question first:
Definition: What is Affiliate Marketing?
According to Neil Patel, "Affiliate marketing is the entire process of making money when promoting a company's or a network's products (both physical and digital)."
You can also define affiliate marketing as "A way to make money while promoting someone else's products online in different channels".
Affiliate marketing process seems quite easy from the definitions I mentioned above.
However, it does involve a chain of events that makes it a little more complicated than you might think.
Here is the catch:
How Does Affiliate Marketing Work?
Affiliate marketing requires a step-by-step process. Well;
First, you must be affiliated with a particular company or network. It will depend on your interest and some other factors that we will discuss later.
After signing up, you will receive an affiliate link to the product you want to promote from that network. Note that each affiliate will receive an affiliate link with a unique ID to avoid any confusion.
Anyway, when a user clicks on the affiliate link in your reference, they are taken to the original sales page.
Now everything depends on whether the user makes a purchase or not. If they do, you will receive a commission from that sale. It will be added to your affiliate account.
Another thing you need to understand throughout the whole process is the "Role of Cookies".
When a user clicks on the link you provide, a website cookie is saved in their browser.
This stored cookie allows you to keep track of things like who bought what product and from what place.
Here is the talisman, "You will still receive the commission due to the presence of cookies, even if someone decides to delay the purchase of a particular product and buys it after a few days."
You should also understand that these cookies may expire and may vary for different affiliate networks.
For example, a popular affiliate network, namely Amazon, provides a 24-hour cookie expiration time.
This is how affiliate marketing works!
How Much Money Can You Make With Affiliate Marketing?
Probably the only episode that will get you super excited about this whole affiliate marketing fiasco!
There is no limit to the money you can make with affiliate marketing.
Depending on how much effort you can put in, it can run from $100 to several thousand dollars a month.
Multiple case studies show that people started affiliate marketing from the ground up and have even grown their website to $20,000 a month.
I also made $735 per month passive income with affiliate marketing. And this is just a website. I have other great sites that make huge affiliate commissions.
Let me tell you something, "This space can save you money while you sleep."
But since Rome wasn't built in a day, you'll have to work for it.
Now that you have decided to get started with affiliate marketing, I am here to help you with a step-by-step strategy.
Affiliate Marketing Strategy: Step by Step Process for Beginners
Anyone newbies to or beginners to affiliate marketing should know that this is not a warm piece of cake they can easily eat.
I will do my best to cover every aspect of the manual so that you can properly understand each concept.
However, it will depend on how much effort you put into achieving the desired results in the minimum time frame.
Have a look:
1. Choose a Niche
The first step in getting started with affiliate marketing is choosing a niche.
In simple words, you have to choose the area of interest in which you want to promote different products. And this is extremely important because the wrong niche might be too competitive for you.
Still, I recommend starting something that interests you. That is, you will need to find an area where you already have some kind of knowledge.
For example, I love digital marketing. And that's hard! I still do it successfully. Just because I love it. Need more ideas? Here are some of them:
- Health and Physique
- Home and Improvement
- Outdoor Tools
Two important terms to understand when choosing a niche are:
A Macro Niche (Broader term that includes all relevant products related to a particular interest)
A Micro Niche (Focus on promoting a single topic or product)
The best way to start as a beginner is to focus on a micro niche as it will cost you less investment and allow you to earn a handful of money in the near future.
If I were to close a micro niche, I would follow this pattern:
Choose a Macro Niche (For example, Online Monetization>Digital Marketing)
Find a micro niche (Content Marketing, Email Marketing and more)
Cover the area I'm more interested in (Digital Marketing Tools)
You can do the same with the broader issues I mentioned.
2. Explore Affiliate Programs For Your Niche
Depending on which field you decide to work in, you will need to start exploring different affiliate programs to promote their products.
The reason you're exploring different affiliate programs is so you can have a better idea of comparing different networks that way.
Then you can choose one or more networks depending on your niche.
The best way to explore different affiliate programs is to search on Google like this
“Affiliate program” + “Your niche”. For example:
Affiliate program + basketball.
You will find dozens of affiliate networks to analyze according to your needs.
When exploring an affiliate network, you need to make sure that;
- You are eligible for this program,
- If it provides a better percentage of sales,
- Whether there are products related to your field in the network or not,
- Whether it is legal or not,
- Cookie expiration with other contractual rules.
3. Choose the Platform to Promote a Product or Service
Once you have chosen a niche and found a suitable affiliate network, you must now choose a platform to promote it.
For this, you should know what kind of platform your target audience uses the most and choose accordingly.
Here are some options you can try to get started with affiliate marketing:
Create a Blog
Although it requires some investment, using an affiliate blog can easily increase your commission rate.
There are different methods of creating a blog site. The easiest is to buy a domain and host it on Blogger or a dedicated hosting service.
You can also try using WordPress to create a beautiful website full of relevant content that will help you promote different products related to your niche.
Influencers around the world use Instagram as their only tool to promote products related to their niche.
It is a little difficult at first, but once you have a good number of followers, you will have a chance to increase your sales on Instagram.
If you want to promote it, you can try this especially Clothing products, Makeup and Jewelry, Footwear, apparel and subscription services etc.
One of the easiest platforms to use to promote affiliate products is YouTube.
Note that it ranks #1 with the most traffic on a single website.
You will also find many potential customers to buy products from your affiliate links on YouTube.
However, before you get started, make sure the affiliate network you choose allows to use YouTube as a promotional platform.
You can also try using YouTube Shorts as this episode has become quite popular with people.
The next platform you can use is Twitter. I personally do not approve of its use to promote products.
However, you can use the power of hashtags on Twitter to increase your affiliate sales accordingly.
The Best Platform Picking Strategy
After choosing a macro niche (Basketball) and turning it into a micro niche (Basketball shoes), create a website that revolves around it.
Next, simply create a YouTube channel, Instagram account and Twitter account about your website.
Just as you promote basketball shoes on your website, you can prepare relevant videos about sports shoes and upload them to different platforms.
You will see an increase in conversion rate and increase your chances of a percentage of sales to make a large amount of money in a short time.
4. Do the Keyword Research
Keyword research serves as the backbone behind creating an affiliate website to promote products.
Without researching the keywords that the buyer is targeting, no matter how hard you try, you will not be able to improve in this area.
Before moving on to the keyword research part, you need to know what a keyword actually is.
Can we define a keyword as something that emphasizes the importance of the content and tells the user what it is about?
For example; Search for the keyword "Basketball Shoes" and you'll find multiple websites ranking for it on Google and other SERPs.
When you open a specific website for that keyword, you will only see information about Basketball Shoes, nothing else.
This is what the keyword means to Google and other search engines.
In simple words, a keyword can be anything a particular user searches for solutions to their problems.
Remember that the magic happens when you search for your seed keyword.
Continuing, we can divide keywords into three main types:
- Informational Keywords
- Affiliate Keywords
- Commercial Keywords
Let's discuss them one by one:
As the name suggests, informational keywords reveal some type of information or knowledge that a user is searching for.
Since you will not be promoting any product while creating informational content, such keywords will not bring you any sales.
However, they play a very important role in improving search engine rankings. On top of that, informational keywords further increase your audience's trust.
Knowledge keywords often include “How to” and “Wh” questions. Also, any keyword intended to solve a problem can be considered an informational keyword.
- How to play Basketball?
- Where to play basketball?
- What are some basic basketball rules?
- When was Basketball invented?
- Who is the best player in basketball right now?
- Basketball game time, and
- Basketball rules, etc.
When we talk about affiliate marketing, affiliate keywords are the real deal.
Why? These are keywords that will potentially drive sales and help you earn your first money from a website or a YouTube channel.
All your content may have affiliate links, but some of the content is based on the buyer's intent. That's why I've split them up here in this affiliate marketing guide for beginners.
So what are affiliate keywords really?
Keywords that show buyer intent and help a user convert into a customer are called affiliate keywords.
Keywords that start with the word "best", for example, best basketball shoes, best outdoor basketball, best indoor basketball, etc.
Keywords ending with "review". For example, Jordan basketball shoe review or Molten basketball review.
Finally, some comparison keywords with "Against" among them can also be considered affiliate keywords. For example Jordan vs Nike basketball shoes or Molten vs Spalding basketball review.
The question here arises, how to find high potential affiliate keywords in 2022?
Well, besides the free tools I mentioned above, you can also use some paid tools to find affiliate keywords.
Commercial keywords are mostly used for paid advertising strategies and campaigns, according to the Semrush blog definition.
The best way to tell if a keyword is commercial is to type it into Google and see what results you get.
If the first three to four websites are tagged as “AD,” it means that particular keyword is commercial.
For starters, you'll only have to worry about informative and affiliate keywords.
However, once your website starts to grow, you will need commercial keywords if you want to run paid campaigns and ads.
The Best Keyword Research Strategy
The best keyword research strategy is to use a mix of free and paid tools along with common sense.
I prefer to use Keywords Everywhere to find the search volume and trend for a particular keyword.
Next, I use MOZ Pro for competitor analysis followed by Keyword Difficulty.
Ahrefs is also there to help me discover more potential affiliates and informative keywords.
I also get help from LSI Graph to improve the structure of my content.
So this is what I prefer when doing keyword research and this strategy will help you find many keywords that will help your website get more traffic and more sales.
5. Start Creating Awesome Content
Powerful keyword research combined with engaging and convertible content will take your affiliate marketing money to a whole new level.
After finishing keyword research, the next step will be to create great and engaging content around them.
Everything we've done so far takes less time than creating content.
Whether it's textual, visual, graphical or audio, your content should be able to compel a user to take action to purchase a particular product or subscription.
How will you create compelling content?
